Fundamental Schools

SVUSD Fundamental Schools
Hollow Hills Elementary School and Vista Elementary School

Simi Valley Unified School District has an open enrollment policy that allows families to enroll at any of our schools through the School of Choice process as long as there is space available. Information about each of our schools is posted on this website. During the 2018-2019 school year, our district will operate 16 neighborhood elementary schools and two fundamental elementary schools: Hollow Hills Elementary School and Vista Elementary School. Many Simi Valley students choose to attend their neighborhood school and find that school to have an excellent program and staff.

January and February are School of Choice season. Parents may access School of Choice information HERE. School of Choice applications should be submitted online by 4 p.m. on February 28, 2018, to participate in the lottery held at each school (except Hollow Hills and Vista – see details below). School tours will be held at all of our elementary schools during the month of February every Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. You may also contact schools directly for more information or a private tour.

California law for Traditional Kindergarten enrollment states that a child must be five-years-old by September 1, 2018. The SVUSD offers Junior Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten (JK/TK) programs for students who may not be developmentally ready for Traditional Kindergarten, or who do not meet the state age requirement. Junior Kindergarten is for children who will turn five-years-old between July 1 and September 1, 2018. Transitional Kindergarten is for children who will turn five-years-old between September 2 and December 2, 2018. School of Choice does not apply for JK/TK. To enroll in JK/TK, please go HERE, download the JK/TK Enrollment form and bring it to the Educational Services department at the SVUSD office along with your child's birth certificate, immunizations record and proof of residence in Simi Valley (utility bill). Informational meetings will be held for JK/TK on Wednesday, January 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Berylwood Elementary School, and for Traditional Kindergarten on Thursday, January 25 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Township Elementary School.

Hollow Hills and Vista Elementary Schools will hold a lottery for Traditional Kindergarten enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. Only students who reside in Simi Valley are eligible for this lottery. Interested parents should decide which fundamental school is most convenient for their family and then submit ONE application to that school's office. Parents may participate in only ONE fundamental school lottery. We will not honor dual requests or accept transfers between the schools. Fundamental school information and lottery applications will be available from February 1 to February 14, 2018, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the following locations (Parents/Guardians must come to the school office to pick up forms; they are not available online or by fax):

Vista Elementary School, A Fundamental School
2175 Wisteria Street

Hollow Hills Elementary School, A Fundamental School
828 Gibson Avenue

Students will be selected for enrollment by lottery on Thursday, February 15. Numbered postcards will be mailed to all applicants the week of February 20. Results will not be given over the telephone.

There will be a Mandatory Parent Meeting for all applicants at Vista Elementary School on Wednesday, February 7 at 6 p.m., and at Hollow Hills Elementary School on Tuesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. in their multipurpose rooms. These meetings have been planned for adults, and we would appreciate your cooperation in making child care arrangements. The meetings will provide key information to help you make a decision regarding the fundamental school program as it relates to your child and family. Students enrolled may not return to their home school during that school year.

If you ARE selected for one of the initial spots at a Fundamental School, you will have until February 28 at 4 p.m. to enroll your child by submitting the required forms to your school. ONCE YOU HAVE SUBMITTED THE ENROLLMENT FORMS, YOUR CHILD'S NAME WILL BE REMOVED FROM ANY OTHER SCHOOL OF CHOICE APPLICATION YOU MAY HAVE SUBMITTED AT OTHER SCHOOLS.

If you are NOT selected in the Fundamental School lottery, applicants will be placed on the Fundamental School waiting list, in the order of the lottery selection. Parents may also apply to another school via School of Choice during the open enrollment period (February 1 to 28, 2018):

  1. Determine if you want your child to attend your neighborhood school or another school in the district for kindergarten. If you desire a school other than your neighborhood school, submit a School of Choice form online by February 28.
  2. If you desire that your child attend kindergarten at your neighborhood school, enroll your child at that school during March. Registration during March will assist us in planning for the coming year.

If you have questions about School of Choice, please call our District Office at 805.306.4500, Ext. 4207, or any of our elementary schools. Thank you for your interest in Simi Valley Schools. We look forward to a successful Kindergarten year for your child and your family in 2018-2019.
