Common Core for Parents

What?

The Common Core State Standards initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators and other experts to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our students for college and the workforce.

These standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education so they will graduate high school able to succeed in academic college courses and in the workforce. They are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world. The new learning standards stress conceptual understanding and application. They are internationally benchmarked to guarantee our students are competitive in the emerging global marketplace.

The California State Board of Education has adopted the Common Core State Standards and has begun implementing the standards. With our students fully prepared for the future, our state will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

Why?

The Common Core State Standards provide opportunity to ensure all students, no matter where they live, are prepared for success in post-secondary education and the workforce.  The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills our young people need to experience success in college and the workforce.

Currently, each state has its own set of standards. Consequently, what students are expected to learn varies state to state. Since 2010, 45 states have adopted the same standards for English and math. These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Now, having the same standards helps all students get a good education, even if they change schools or move to a different state. Teachers, parents, and education experts designed the CCSS to prepare students for success in college and the workplace.

How?

Full implementation and testing of the Common Core State Standards will occur in the 2014-2015 school year.

California State Department of Education has provided this timeline to determine how the Common Core State Standards will be implemented.
