ELEMENTARY REPORT CARDS
What areas will my student receive a score for?
Students will receive a rubric score in the five major academic areas: English Language Arts (ELA), Writing, Math, History/Social Science and Science.
Should I expect my child to get all 4s on the report card?
The goal for the grade level is a 3. A 4 is earned when a student consistently shows mastery and application of grade level standards.
Will my student receive a 2 if standard has not yet been taught?
Student’s grades will reflect their performance on what has been taught at time of reporting. The grade will reflect where the student is, at that time. If a standard has not been taught it will be marked with an NA.
How is progress for English Language Development represented?
Identified English Learners (ELs) will receive progress scores for English language development separate from academic subject area scores. Progress scores will be aligned with the levels of the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California - ELPAC (1- Emerging, 2 - Bridging, 3 - Expanding).
Will I know how my student is performing prior to the report card?
The Aeries Parent Portal serves as a communication tool that allows families to monitor their student’s progress throughout the school year. We will continue to use this tool as a critical form of communication. Aeries allows families access to what is currently happening in the classroom to help support their child’s learning. Progress reports, conferences, and parent-teacher communication are additional ways to monitor student progress.
How are areas of concern and/or standards not addressed communicated on the report card?
If a child “needs improvement” there will be a mark of “X” next to the specific standard that is an area of concern.
Does my child’s behavior affect his/her academic score?
A student’s rubric score in the content areas is based on his/her level of mastery of the standards through repeated opportunities to demonstrate learning. Characteristics of a Successful Learner and Responsibility for Behavior (on the second page of the Report Card) are separated from the content areas to receive scores of O, S, N, and U.
Why is the K-5th grade report card different than the Secondary report card?
Elementary in SVUSD uses Standards Referenced Reporting to better communicate how a child is doing in a particular set of standards. Descriptors are provided to increase understanding of what students are being asked to do.
Will I be able to see the actual report card when I log into Aeries?
To view your student’s report card:
1. Log into the Aeries Parent Portal using your email and password
2. Scroll down to the section titled “Report Card History”
3. Click on the language next to the reporting period for which you want to view/print the report card
How is a student’s score determined?
A student’s performance level is based on his/her level of mastery of the standards through repeated opportunities to demonstrate learning. Based on student performance, percentage grades will be entered into the Aeries gradebook. Final semester grades will be determined by the average scores in each academic area. These averages will be translated into a rubric score based on the scale above.
Why does grading start over at the semester?
The California Academic Standards are year long standards. As the year progresses, so should a students’ understanding and mastery. If the end of the year score is an average starting from the first semester, it may not accurately reflect a student’s learning.
