Dear Simi Valley Schools Community:

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. It’s going to be an amazing year!

As superintendent, I know this will be a great year because I’ve watched our staff throughout the Simi Valley Unified School District work hard and with much enthusiasm to prepare for this coming year. From our newest teachers setting up their classrooms and creating their lesson plans, to our facilities department sprucing up our campuses, our district staff updating our systems, and our administrative staff overseeing training and hiring at every level, everyone has been working at full capacity to make sure our students are well cared for when they come to school this Wednesday. I could not be prouder of our staff.

Some of the many changes happening around our school district this year include:

  • The transition of Knolls Elementary School into a Project-Based Learning School;
  • The transition of Madera Elementary School into a Civics Leadership School;
  • The continued three-year positive certification for our budget from the County;
  • The many beautiful facility improvements at our schools that were completed over the summer;
  • The start of more facility improvements, thanks to last year’s passage of the Measure X bond; and
  • The adoption of new English and Language Arts materials in all grades.

This is just a sampling of what’s happening in your schools. For the coming year, we can’t be more excited about the purchase of a new district office home. We’ve waited a long time for the right opportunity to become available, and we’ve found it at the new Cochran Street location. Even better, we were able to purchase this property with the proceeds of the sale of the current district office, and additional surplus property proceeds. No general funds or bond monies were used to achieve this effort. We’re hoping to move by the end of this year, and the new facility promises to provide much better resources for all of our staff and our community. For more information, see www.simivalleyusd.org/NewDistrictOffice.

Lastly, we want to welcome the 35 new teachers coming to us this year and celebrate some new leaders to our district. Many have been with us for a long time. A couple are new to us. We’re delighted to welcome them to our family and we know they will be wonderful resources for you at their respective sites. They are:

Shay Lundstrom, Principal at Katherine Elementary School
Shanda Weaver, Principal at Knolls Elementary School
John C. (JC) Baxter, Asst. Principal at Simi Valley High School
April Jacobsen, Asst. Principal at Simi Valley High School
Brian Kiunke, Director of Activities at Simi Valley High School
Ila Laguercia, Counselor at Simi Valley High School
Cynthia Fernandes, Asst. Principal at Sana Susana High School
Mark Sheinberg, Asst. Principal at Simi Institute for Careers & Education
Thomas (Tee) Buckle, Asst. Principal at Hillside Middle School
Shannon Madsen, Dean at Hillside Middle School
Jennifer Conmay, Assistant Principal at Sinaloa Middle School
Matthew Long, Dean at Sinaloa Middle School
Aamina Hennings, Counselor at Royal High School
Sophia Crocker, Director of Classified Personnel (District Office)
Dr. Richard Underhill, Coordinator of Categoricals (District Office)
Jamie Snodgrass, Coordinator of Curriculum & Assessment (District Office)
Shauna Messinger, Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) for Math (District Office)

Finally, we want to acknowledge that while we’re enjoying the many wonderful things happening around our district, our main goals of improving student achievement and improving customer service remain our top priorities. We know that every child coming into our schools can and will reach their highest potential. Our mission is to create an atmosphere of inclusion for all students and to install a lifelong love of learning. Our doors remain open for every child. That’s our promise to you.

We are all here for you and your children, and we thank you for entrusting them to our care. Please remember to drive safely in and around our schools during these first weeks especially. We know that at Simi Valley Schools, our students go from here to anywhere!

I look forward to sharing this amazing year with you!
